Tips for Preparing Your Pet for Summer Trips

If you’re planning any fun summer trips with your pets, there are some things you can do to get your pet ready. Taking a little time to prepare will protect your pet’s health and make sure he doesn’t get lost. Follow this advice for preparing your pet for summer trips:

Visit your Veterinarian

Before heading out of town with your pet, take him to his veterinarian for a check-up. Your veterinarian will make sure your pet is in good enough health to travel. He will also make sure your pet is up to date on his vaccinations, as well as heartworm medication and flea and tick prevention. You can also ask your veterinarian about how to ease your pet’s anxiety during plane or car travel.

Bring an Emergency Kit

You should bring an emergency kit with you in the car or on the plane. The kit should have everything you need to take care of your pet if an accident or illness should occur. Make sure it contains flea and tick prevention, an antihistamine, cleansing wipes, a backup collar and harness, and gauze or bandages. You should also include rubber or latex gloves, an antibacterial or antibiotic cream, tweezers, and styptic powder. You’ll really want to have this with you if you’re taking your pet on a hike or bringing him camping with you.

Verify Microchip and Tag Information

Finally, make sure that you verify that your pet’s microchip information and the tags on his collar are up to date. If they aren’t, be sure to replace them or update the information as necessary. If your pet gets away from you while you’re traveling, it will be much harder to find him than it would be if you were at home. Having him microchipped and with up to date tags will make it easier.

If you plan on traveling with your pet this summer, make sure to schedule a visit with your veterinarian first. Make sure your veterinarian knows where you’ll be going, how you’ll get there, and what you’ll be doing together.
